Beekeeping for Beginners

Have you thought about keeping bees, but not sure if where to start? We’ll cover what it takes to get started as a beekeeper, how to manage a honeybee colony, how to extract honey and make other products of the hive, swarm catching, and more! Choose from three weekends and stay either Friday or Saturday night:

  • Saturday, June 19th
  • Saturday, July 31st
  • Saturday, August 14th

In this class you’ll learn about:

  • Equipment and tools used in beekeeping
  • Local municipality laws
  • Where to get bees and beekeeping equipment
  • Finding the perfect location for your bees
  • Basic honey bee biology and behavior
  • Seasonal management of a colony
  • The honey bee colony as a superorganism, and the reproductive swarm
  • Common pests and diseases
  • How to extract honey
  • Products of the hive

We’ll also have hands-on activities, including:

  • Honey tasting
  • Honeycomb examination
  • Pollen and propolis tasting

This package includes:

  • Workshop – choose one: 9am-11am (for guests staying Friday evening) or 1pm-3pm (for guests staying Saturday evening)
  • One night room (Friday or Saturday)
